How the lungs respond to inhaled aerosol

Vaping aerosol isn't smoke, but it isn't inert either. The lungs respond to any inhaled foreign material with some degree of irritation and mucus production, which is part of why new vapers sometimes notice a dry cough or throat tickle in the first weeks. What lung function studies have found

What's harder to study is the long game โ€” vaping as a mainstream daily habit is still a young phenomenon, and lung diseases like COPD typically take decades of exposure to show up on a spirometer. Researchers are honest that the picture for lifetime, daily vaping remains incomplete.

Shortness of breath: vaping-related or something else?

Breathlessness has a lot of possible causes โ€” deconditioning, weight change, allergies, anaemia, anxiety, or an underlying heart or lung condition โ€” so it's not automatically a vaping symptom. That said, nicotine itself raises heart rate, and inhaling any aerosol regularly can plausibly contribute to reduced exercise tolerance in some people. If you've noticed a real change in what you can do without getting winded, it's worth tracking when it started rather than assuming a single cause.

Coughing, throat clearing and airway irritation

A persistent cough, frequent throat clearing or a feeling of tightness in the chest after vaping are the airway's way of signalling irritation. For most people this settles down after quitting, sometimes within days, sometimes over a few weeks, as the airways recover from repeated aerosol exposure. If a cough is new, doesn't improve, or comes with wheezing or chest pain, that's a different situation and worth a proper medical look rather than self-diagnosis.

When to see a doctor

None of this is a reason to panic, but it is a reason to take persistent respiratory symptoms seriously. See a doctor if you notice ongoing shortness of breath, a cough lasting more than a few weeks, wheezing, chest pain, or breathlessness that's getting worse rather than better โ€” especially if you also smoke or have a history of asthma or other lung conditions. A clinician can check for causes unrelated to vaping and give you an honest read on your own lung function, which a forum post never can.
