That's a real improvement in some respects. What secondhand smoke does, as the baseline
Secondhand cigarette smoke is extremely well studied, and the findings are unambiguous: it contains many of the same carcinogens and toxic gases as the smoke a smoker inhales directly, and there is no known safe level of exposure to it. It's linked to respiratory infections, worsened asthma, and ear infections in children, and to heart disease and lung cancer risk in adults exposed regularly. What's actually in secondhand vapour
Exhaled e-cigarette aerosol is chemically different from cigarette smoke because there's no combustion involved, so it doesn't carry the same tar and carbon monoxide load. However, it isn't simply water vapour: exhaled aerosol contains nicotine, ultrafine particles, flavouring chemicals, and small amounts of metals from heating coils, all of which can be measured in the air and, to a lesser extent, absorbed by bystanders nearby. Research on secondhand vaping is younger and smaller in volume than the decades of secondhand smoke research, so the long-term picture for regular bystander exposure isn't as complete.
Why "less bad" isn't the same as "no exposure"
Bystanders near someone vaping indoors are measurably exposed to nicotine and fine particles, even without inhaling directly from the device. For most healthy adults briefly nearby, current evidence doesn't point to anything close to the risk secondhand smoke carries. But for people who are more vulnerable to airway irritation, and especially for infants and young children in a home where vaping happens regularly indoors, exposure isn't zero simply because it isn't smoke — it's a smaller, less-studied version of the same basic category of exposure.
Where the vaping vs. smoking gap matters most
The gap between vaping and smoking is at its widest for bystanders precisely because combustion is what generates the most dangerous secondhand exposure. If someone in a household is going to use either product, switching entirely from cigarettes to vaping is very likely to reduce what the rest of the household breathes in. That's a meaningful, real improvement — it just isn't the same as removing exposure altogether, which is why many of the same precautions long recommended for smoking (not vaping around infants, stepping outside, ventilating indoor spaces) still apply, in a reduced form, to vaping too.
What this means in practice
If you vape and share a home with children, a pregnant partner, or anyone with respiratory conditions, treating indoor vaping the way you'd treat any nicotine product around vulnerable people — with distance, ventilation, and honesty about what's actually known — is a reasonable middle ground between "it's just water vapour" and "it's exactly like smoke."
