The mind isn't built to feel tiny numbers
Human intuition handles differences between common probabilities reasonably well โ a 40% chance clearly feels riskier than a 10% chance. This distortion gets stronger, not weaker, as the potential prize grows. Cass Sunstein and George Loewenstein's work on "probability neglect" found that when an outcome carries strong emotional weight, like the vivid, life-changing image of a huge jackpot, people's judgement shifts from weighing probability and magnitude together toward focusing almost entirely on the outcome itself. The imagined feeling of winning crowds out the actual likelihood of it happening. This is precisely why jackpot games advertise the prize in vivid, specific terms, a house, a private island, debt-free, while the odds are printed in small text, if at all.
Why bigger jackpots don't feel proportionately less likely
A useful way to see the distortion: doubling a lottery jackpot from ten million to twenty million doesn't double how "worth it" the ticket feels, even though the odds of winning haven't improved at all. What moves is the vividness of the imagined outcome, not the probability, which stays exactly as astronomically small as before. Rollover jackpots exploit this directly, growing the emotionally compelling number while the mathematical chance of winning it barely shifts, and in games where more tickets get sold as the jackpot grows, the odds of a bigger prize being split can actually worsen the average outcome.
What actually helps
Converting probability into something spatial or concrete tends to cut through the distortion better than another string of zeros does. One in 300 million is close to the odds of a specific, randomly chosen grain of sand being picked out of several large trucks' worth. Framings like this make the actual scale registrable in a way raw percentages rarely do. It also helps to separate the two things probability neglect blends together: how good winning would feel, which is real and doesn't need debunking, and how likely winning actually is, which is the number worth treating as effectively unchanged whatever the jackpot headline says. If lottery or jackpot-style spending is creeping up specifically because the advertised prize keeps growing, that's a useful moment to look at the odds printed in the small text rather than the number in the headline.
