Where the idea comes from

Tinbergen's original experiments were about instinct, not desire. Where the theory oversteps

The idea gets stretched too far when it's treated as a proven neurological verdict — as though "supernormal stimulus" is a diagnosis rather than a useful evolutionary metaphor. It's a framework for thinking about why something might feel compelling, not direct evidence of brain damage, addiction, or a specific mechanism inside any one person's head. Researchers use it as one lens among several, alongside conditioning and habituation models, not as a settled explanation on its own.

A useful distinction: exposure versus content

The supernormal-stimulus framework also helps separate two things that often get blurred: the sheer novelty and volume of exposure, and the specific content itself. Much of the pull described in this research comes from the delivery mechanism — infinite scroll, instant availability, algorithmic curation — rather than from any single video or image being unusually powerful on its own. That distinction matters practically: changing how content is accessed, such as removing infinite variety, adding friction, or limiting availability, tends to interact with this specific mechanism more directly than trying to reason your way out of a craving in the moment.
