Smoking doesn't just add to that risk arithmetically — because it independently increases clotting tendency, it meaningfully raises risk for smokers specifically in these situations. This is a common reason surgical teams ask patients to quit, even temporarily, in the weeks before a planned operation.

Blood's clotting tendency and viscosity begin normalising after quitting, part of a broader recovery in cardiovascular function that starts within weeks and continues over months and years. Combined with staying mobile during travel or after surgery and following any medical advice around clot prevention, quitting meaningfully reduces the excess clotting risk smoking adds.
