PG vs VG ratio explained — why it changes how vaping actually feels

Every e-liquid bottle carries a ratio like 50/50, 70/30, or 30/70 — and that number quietly explains most of the differences vapers notice between brands and devices. It's the ratio of propylene glycol (PG) to vegetable glycerin (VG), the two carrier liquids that make up the bulk of e-liquid. Getting the ratio badly mismatched to a device is also one of the most common reasons vaping feels unexpectedly harsh.

What PG actually does

Propylene glycol is thinner and carries flavor compounds more efficiently, which is why high-PG e-liquids tend to taste more intense and "true" to the flavoring used. It also produces a stronger sensation at the back of the throat — the "throat hit" that many ex-smokers specifically look for, because it mimics part of the physical sensation of inhaling cigarette smoke. The trade-off is thinner vapor and, for a small proportion of people, mild throat or sinus irritation at high PG concentrations.

What VG actually does

Vegetable glycerin is thicker and sweeter on its own, and it's the ingredient responsible for dense, visible vapor clouds. High-VG e-liquids feel smoother on the throat and inhale, but they mute flavor slightly compared with an equivalent high-PG mix, and the thicker liquid needs a device built to vaporize it properly — thin, low-power coils can struggle with high-VG liquid and produce weak or gurgling results.

Why the ratio has to match the device

This is where mismatches cause real, avoidable problems. Simple pod systems and many disposables are built around higher-PG e-liquid, matched to their lower-power, tighter-draw coils — often the same base used for nicotine salt formulations. Sub-ohm tanks and mods are built for higher-VG liquid at higher wattages, producing the big clouds associated with that style of vaping. Putting a high-VG liquid in a low-power pod system typically produces weak, muted vapor; putting a very high-PG liquid in a high-wattage mod can produce a harsher, thinner result than the device is designed for.

The sensitivity question

A genuine minority of people report irritation, dry mouth, or mild allergic -type reactions specifically linked to PG, and switching to a higher-VG e-liquid sometimes resolves it — though anyone with a persistent reaction is better off speaking to a doctor rather than self-diagnosing an ingredient sensitivity. VG is generally the gentler option for sensitive airways, at the cost of some flavor clarity.

The bottom line on ratios

There's no objectively "correct" PG/VG ratio — it's a genuine trade-off between throat hit and flavor intensity on one side, and smoothness and cloud production on the other, and it needs to match the device it's going into. Anyone finding a particular e-liquid harsh, weak, or oddly flavored is often looking at a ratio-device mismatch before anything else, and it's worth checking that ratio against the device's specifications before assuming the product itself is faulty.
