The gambler's fallacy — why you're never actually "due" a win

Five red numbers in a row on the roulette wheel. Ten spins without a bonus on a slot machine. A run of losing bets on a coin-flip market. At some point, a thought arrives that feels less like hope and more like logic: "it has to turn around soon." That thought has a name — the gambler's fallacy — and it's one of the most consistent thinking traps in gambling, precisely because it feels so reasonable.

What the gambler's fallacy actually is

The gambler's fallacy is the belief that if something happens more often than normal during a given period, it will happen less often in the future, or vice versa — even when the events are statistically independent. A fair roulette wheel has no memory. Each spin is not connected to the last one. The probability of red or black stays the same every single time, regardless of how many reds came before it. The same is true of most casino games and many betting markets: past outcomes don't shift future odds, no matter how compelling the streak looks.

Why our brains fall for it so easily

Humans are pattern-seeking by nature. It helped our ancestors spot danger and find food, but it works badly with random number sequences. We expect short-term randomness to "look" random — a mix of wins and losses — so a long losing streak feels statistically wrong, like it must correct itself. In reality, streaks of all lengths are a normal, expected feature of random processes. The discomfort we feel watching one is a mismatch between how randomness actually behaves and how we intuitively expect it to behave.

Where this myth shows up most

The gambler's fallacy is strongest wherever outcomes look cleanly binary or cyclical: roulette colours, slot machine "near misses", lottery numbers that "haven't come up in a while", and coin-flip-style sports or crypto betting markets. Some products are also designed in ways that reinforce the illusion — slot machines display recent spin history, and some betting apps highlight streaks — which can make the fallacy feel like it's backed by visible evidence, even though the underlying odds never moved.

The real math behind "independent events"

In games of pure chance, each round is what statisticians call an independent event: its outcome has no causal link to the round before it. Over a very large number of spins, results will indeed average out toward the expected probability — but that's a property of huge sample sizes, not of any single next spin "correcting" a recent run. Betting more, or betting differently, because of a streak doesn't shift the odds in your favour. It just changes how much is at stake on a bet that still has exactly the same probability as any other.

What actually helps once you notice the pattern

Naming the fallacy is often the first useful step: noticing the thought "I'm due" as a thought, not a fact, takes some of its power away. Setting a spend or time limit before playing — rather than deciding in the moment, when a streak is actively distorting judgement — keeps decisions closer to a clear-headed baseline. If gambling regularly involves chasing streaks or feeling "owed" a win, that's worth discussing with a doctor or a gambling support service; it's a common and well-recognised pattern, not a personal failing.
